On Wednesday this week, Dr Julia Ambler and Tracey Brand, co-founders of Umduduzi, Hospice Care for Children and partners in the upcoming 3rd ICPCN Conference in Durban were interviewed by Kevin Minter Brown of Durban Youth Radio.
In the interview, Dr Ambler describes to the listeners what children’s palliative care is all about and describes the important work done my Umduduzi by telling the story of how they were there to support a 12-year-old girl with a brain tumour and her family as she approached the end of life.
Asked why the conference is an important event for not only local health care professionals but also those within South African and abroad, Tracey Brand explains how bringing some of the top national and international experts in the field of children’s palliative care to South Africa will provide a much needed boost of knowledge and skills to those caring for very sick children in our own country.
She goes on to explain how ICPCN is working hard to build up a Scholarship Fund to help and support the attendance of those who may not have the funds to pay the full registration fees through a Blind Auction.
Items on offer in the Blind Auction
In a blind auction, a person can take a look at what’s on offer, decide if they like what you see, decide how much they are prepared to pay for the item, then submit a bid. Remember that there are a number of people out there who will be doing the same thing, so what one person decides is a worthwhile price, may be less that what someone else thinks. Every cent of each winning bid will go to provide full or partial scholarships. Those who do not wish to bid on an item are also encouraged to donate towards the scholarship fund.
Some of the exciting items on offer in this blind auction include:
- Two nights for 2 people at Fairmont Zimbali Resort (value R8800)
- Weekend stay for 2 adults and 2 children at Pumula Beach Hotel (value R8500)
- Weekend stay for 2 at aha Riverside Hotel (value R5100)
