Programme encourages nurses to “put patients first”

FoNS are looking to support eleven nurse-led teams from November 2013, and applications are welcome from teams in any healthcare setting across the UK.

Over a period of 12-18 months, the Patients First Programme provides:

  • a programme of 5 workshops of support and development that bring together the nurse-led teams to explore and enable effective strategies for developing and changing practice and provide opportunities for networking and sharing
  • facilitation in the workplace to enable the development of knowledge and skills in leading and facilitating sustainable changes in practice and improvements in care
  • access to practice development tools and resources
  • advice on developing effective project plans/proposals
  • encouragement to identify and make links with people who may be able to offer support locally
  • help to keep a central focus on the patient and/or service users and the issues that matter to them the most
  • peer mentorship linking up team leaders with those who have completed similar initiatives
  • support with publishing and active dissemination
  • bursary of up to £5000.

The programme, which is run in partnership with the Burdett Trust for Nursing, has supported 49 teams since 2009, including projects to establish a nurse-led respite ward at St Joseph’s Hospiceraise the profile of preferred priorities at the end of life with patients at St Nicholas’ Hospice and improve food and nutrition for patients at Pilgrims Hospices.
