World Hospice and Palliative Care Day on 13 October 2012 is a unified day of action to celebrate and support hospice and palliative care around the world.
To mark the day thousands of people in around 60 countries are coming together at more than 1,000 events to celebrate, support and speak up about hospice and palliative care. Here’s how national palliative care associations across Africa are mobilising their communities.
Palliative Care Association of Uganda (PCAU)
12 October
- Soccer gala held at the old Kampala Secondary school grounds.
Palliative Care Association of Zambia (PCAZ)
13 October
- Community march that will end up at the Homabay hospice, which houses two hospices. Ther will also be various activities at various venues including; cancer screening, Rapid HIV testing, testing for diabetes, counseling.
- The Guest of honour at the community march will be the Minister of Health who has been informed of a number items on the advocacy agenda. Invitations have been extended to media houses to cover the event and and to publicise the Minister of Health’s involvement.
- Documentary highlighting the events of 13th to raise awareness to the community
- An open day with the public invited as a way of raising awareness.
Kenya Hospice and Palliative Care Association (KEHPCA):
13 October
- “Handles Messiah” concert with various choirs performing at the Bomas of Kenya on sat 13th Oct. Entrance fees for the event will go toward supporting Nairobi Hospice.
Palliative Care Association of Malawi
2nd November
- A day of National Prayer for the elderly will coincide with the PACAM annual conference in Lilongwe. Association members recommended holding a National Day of Prayer considering that the spiritual aspect of palliative care often less prioritised and this could be a way to mobilise spiritual leaders. The Ministry of Health principle secretary has been invited as the guest of honour.
African Palliative Care Association – Namibia palliative care awareness week
The APCA Namibia country office will be engaging stakeholders in palliative care activities throughout the week of World Hospice and Palliative Care Day. Key activities will include:
- Palliative care poster and pamphlet dissemination
- Media Events (Radio, Television & News Paper Articles) throughout the week
- Palliative Care Sensitization Breakfast Meeting with the Parliamentarians (18 Oct 2012)
- Pain Sensitization Dinner Meeting targeting the Medical Doctors (18 Oct 2012)
- Patient Edutainment day on Palliative Care (18 Oct 2012)
- Students/ Lecturers Edutainment day on Palliative Care (17 Oct 2012)
- Launch of the National Palliative Care Training Curriculum and Manual by MOHSS (18 Oct 2012).
