Uganda celebrates ‘palliative care week’ – 26th to 31st May 2014

Categories: Community Engagement.

The passing of a resolution on palliative care at the 67th World Health Assembly means the desperate need for palliative care is acknowledged and individuals living in pain from life-threatening illnesses are closer to receiving the care they need. It is in this history making moment that Hospice Africa Uganda (HAU) is celebrating Palliative Care Week 2014, from 26th May to 31st May.

This exciting week will work to bring attention to the need for palliative care in Uganda and will include events around Uganda in an effort to create awareness about palliative care and other general health issues. Events will all take place at the Makindye site of HAU headquarters across from the Makindye Country Club.

On Monday the 26th there will be an Institute of Hospice and Palliative Care in Africa (IHPCA) Open Day, which will provide an opportunity for potential students to visit and learn about the IHPCA offerings in palliative care education and training. There will be a retrospective documentary presented highlighting the evolution of IHPCA, lectures given by Dr. Margaret Tumwebaze Tusiime on eLearning in palliative care in Africa and by Nobel Peace Prize Nominee, HAU Founder Dr. Anne Merriman on “21 Years of PC Education in Uganda”. We will be joined by Ms. Janet Obuni the President of the Uganda Nurses and Midwives Union as the Guest of Honour.

The HAU Health Fair on Wednesday 28th May will offer HIV/AIDS testing and counselling, cancer and hepatitis B screening, blood donation and wellness checks in addition to having information available on fitness, nutrition, and more. This is an excellent opportunity for the community to get important health services and information.

Theatre for Hospice has had two successful productions of Shakespeare in the past and is excited to be bringing Shakespeare’s Macbeth to life in an open air theatre with African styling. Tickets are 20,000/= with three evening performances, Thursday through Saturday at 7:00 pm and an afternoon performance at 3:00pm on Saturday the 31st, where students are invited to come for a reduced ticket price of 15,000/=.
