Says AHS ED Debbie Lehmann, “This all started in 1985, when a handful of people gathered with a vision of a hospice society and residence in Abbotsford. For years, we have provided outstanding care in the form of support services and resources. But despite those heroic efforts we knew that dying people, and their loved ones, deserved more. We believe that people who are dying should have the dignity, care, and comfort of a world-class residential hospice in their own community. Families will no longer have to travel to other communities to see their dying loved ones, and dying people will be able to spend their final days in the community they love.”
Holmberg House will be a world-class facility with ten spacious residential suites, a guest suite, a children’s play therapy space, a restorative garden, an art and complementary therapy room, space for volunteer training, memorial service space, and much more. See the attached fact sheet for more details.
About Abbotsford Hospice Society
Abbotsford Hospice Society (AHS) provides emotional and social support for people who are dying, and children, teens and adults grieving the death of a loved one. Since 1986, without a single residential bed, AHS has offered services such as one to one and family counselling, support groups, crisis debriefing, expressive therapies, music and play therapy for grieving children and grief support for teens. Additionally, AHS offers public education, outreach, a comprehensive lending library and community referrals. AHS is half-way through a capital fundraising campaign for Holmberg House, which will be the first adult hospice residence in Abbotsford, as well as a resource centre for those who are grieving. AHS provides all services free of charge and offers specific, specialized support throughout the region.
