The International Children’s Palliative Care Network (ICPCN) is delighted to announce the release of A Really Practical Handbook of Children’s Palliative Care for Doctors and Nurses Anywhere in the World by Dr Justin Amery.
Dr Justin Amery has authored and contributed widely to texts, original articles and reports in children’s palliative care, including The Oxford Textbook for Children’s Palliative Care in Africa, for which he was the coordinating editor and lead author. He held the post of Medical Director at Helen House (the world’s first children’s hospice) from 1995 to 2005 and also helped design and develop one of the world’s first hospices for young adults, Douglas House, where he was founding Medical Director. In 2006 he moved to Hospice Africa Uganda where he took over as Clinical Director, setting up a new Children’s Palliative Care Service, coordinating the Distance Learning Diploma Course in Palliative Care and developing a new post-graduate certificate course in children’s palliative Care.
In the Foreword to this new release he writes that this book draws and builds on his own research, teaching and training as well as the knowledge and experiences gathered over the previous 20 years and says, “I have been struck by how children’s palliative care is essentially the same, wherever you go…. Wherever they are, children are still children, and palliative care is still palliative care.”
Referring to the book, Dr Amery says that he has long dreamed of being able to write something that is freely accessible to everyone and which could be just as useful to a doctor in the USA as to a nurse in Bolivia and to a Clinical Officer in Uganda.
The book is structured around common questions that arise in often difficult palliative care situations. Each chapter deals with one question, and starts by reminding the reader of what they already know before going on to fill in some common gaps.
Contributors to the book include experts in children’s palliative care and in their respective fields from around the world and include:
