The Worldwide Hospice Palliative Care Alliance (WHPCA), an international NGO, plans to assess the capacity for palliative care in India.
The global voluntary body will work closely with the Union and state governments to ensure greater financial and infrastructure support to extend care to persons whose illnesses have gone beyond cure.
Palliative care is a multidisciplinary approach to specialised medical care for people with serious illnesses. It focuses on providing patients with relief from the symptoms. “The assessment may include survey of volunteers offering palliative care to patients in their homes in addition to the study of centres which the non-governmental organisations or private sector companies have set up in the country,” said Stephen R Connor, executive director of WHPCA.
