President Colin Campbell said the Bring It Home campaign aims to expand the organization’s in-home, end-of-life community care programs to a 20,000-sq.-ft. building on the grounds of Pheasant Run Public School in Erin Mills.
The organization recently purchased the land and plans to demolish the school, which is no longer in use.
Early plans of the new digs will feature 10 private client bedrooms while offering all of the comforts a patient would get at home such as a kitchen, living room and patio.
“A lot of times when people are dying, they want to be at home. They don’t want to be in a clinical setting,” said Lisa Hoekstra, Heart House spokesperson.
Hoekstra could not release how much the construction project would cost at this time, but she can’t stress enough how news of the campaign is progress.
“It’s so powerful because we’re saying that this dream of having a residential facility in Mississauga — we’re going to make it happen,” she said.
The president made the announcement during the hospice’s annual gala held Saturday (March 22) at the Mississauga Convention Centre.
Entitled, “A Night in Wonderland,” the event dazzled the audience with a bevy of whimsical entertainers, including hula-hoopers and magician Raman Sharma.
Hosted by CBC News Toronto personality Anne-Marie Mediwake, an early tally of fundraising numbers put the amount raised at $65,000, which all goes to support hospice patients and their families.
