“We are planning to break ground April 2016,” said Sullivan, adding that the work will build the live-in portion of the hospice, which currently offers only day programming.

But the fundraising for the Kanata hospice is not quite finished, she said.

Hospice Care Ottawa hopes to raise another $1.5 million.

For the past several years, the organization, through its Hospice Ottawa West Campaign, has been working to raise $6 million to permanently locate 10 hospice care beds at the Ruddy-Shenkman Hospice at 110 McCurdy Dr., which was purchased in June 2013.

As fundraising has gone on, the organization has continued to assess the need for beds in the Ottawa area.

“We have decided to build more rooms,” said Sullivan.

A site plan proposal for the addition to the hospice was sent to the city July 21, saying the addition would include 12 bedrooms – two more than originally planned.
