Volunteers with the Near North Palliative Care Network gathered on Main Street in North Bay on May 11th, 2017, offering our community “Hugs for Hospice”. We chose May 11th because it fell on National Hospice Palliative Care Week. Celebrating hospice, our volunteers and recognizing our 30 years of service. Our volunteers had great fun, and our community was more that receptive to free hugs!
The Near North Palliative Care Network (NNPCN) is a Community Visiting Hospice in Northern Ontario. We serve a population of about 96,000, which includes North Bay, Mattawa, West Nipissing and south to Almaguin. Our hospice started by a very small group of women from Powassan in 1987. We now have close to 100 volunteers, covering a massive geography, which includes small communities in the Nipissing and East Parry Sound districts. We are funded by the Ministry of Health, through the North East, Local Health Integrated Network (NE LHIN) and by a number of ongoing fundraising activities.
Our services include palliative care, respite, bereavement and care giver support. We service 100’s of clients annually at no cost to our clients. We also run a number of other programs providing education and support to seniors and the vulnerable population in our geography. We could not provide this valuable service without our magnificent and dedicated volunteers. Our volunteers Rock!
