Last week, Ian made his way to North Bay and Sudbury where he was greeted by many offering home cooked meals and a place to sleep. As he reached North Bay and Sudbury, the scorching summer heat has changed Ian’s schedule, forcing him to start earlier in the morning to avoid the summer sun. Ian visited the Nipissing Serenity Hospice in North Bay, where he talked about the need for awareness for end-of-life care.
While in Sudbury, Ian met with the Mayor, as well as a tour of the city and took a picture at the iconic Big Nickel. While in Sudbury, Ian visited Maison Vale Hospice and was greeted to a warm, welcoming crowd. As Ian enters the more rural areas of Northern Ontario, he has been very appreciative of the efforts given towards him. “I have been very fortunate to receive the help of many kind and generous people in the Canadian Military as I enter northern Ontario…. This kindness from fellow Canadians is humbling, and I am even more grateful for it as I begin to enter a remote part of northern Ontario where I will need to draw upon people’s support to carry on in my journey.” Along the way, Ian says that he has heard so many stories of individuals who have experienced palliative/hospice care which keeps him determined to keep walking everyday.
Each step that Ian takes is a step in the right direction towards end-of-life care awareness in Canada. I am in awe of Ian’s courage and bravery to stand up and make this cause a topic of concern for every Canadian family. Ian is nearly halfway towards his goal of $25,000 and is very excited to reach Thunder Bay.
