ROLE PURPOSE:
Reporting to the Director, Clinical Care, the Head of Nursing is responsible for providing leadership to the nursing team, that includes Registered Nurses (RN), Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN) and Patient Care Attendants (PCA) and collaborating with management across the Residence to provide best in class and consistent end of life care and support to our patients and their families that is aligned with our mission and palliative care philosophy.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

People Management/Leadership

  • Manage, motivate and engage the nursing team
  • Proactively identify competency/skills gaps/needs and work in collaboration with the Director of Education to ensure the development and implementation of appropriate training curriculum, and co-facilitate/introduce training sessions when appropriate
  • Ensure strong presence on the floor, on all shifts, to assess and evaluate skill and knowledge base and ensure the team is providing consistent, compassionate and professional palliative care
  • Proactively address issues and concerns
  • Provision of ongoing feedback and coaching to direct reports
  • Plans and leads regular team meetings
  • Proactively identify and implement employee support needs (i.e. bereavement, emotional)
  • Proactively identify staffing needs and take a leadership role in the attraction, recruitment, and retention of nursing employees
  • Ensure training, education and professional development of nursing team in palliative care delivery and according to needs
  • Ensure the effective implementation of the performance management process (i.e. annual performance reviews) and the development and follow-through of individual development plans
  • Identify volunteer needs and participate in the recruitment and training of clinical care volunteers and ensuring the effective integration onto the team
  • Ensure oversight of the clinical rotation of nursing students (i.e. assigning a mentor, teaching, evaluating)
