For people living with advanced or terminal illness, admission to intensive care can bring difficult decisions for patients, families, and healthcare professionals. Alongside life-sustaining treatment, there is a need for clear communication, shared decision-making, symptom relief and care that remains aligned with what is appropriate for the individual.
The MATHRU project, funded by ICMR and led by Dr Naveen Salins, Professor in the Department of Palliative Medicine and Supportive Care at Kasturba Medical College, Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), India, is examining how palliative and supportive care can be better integrated into intensive care settings.
MATHRU brings together key elements of care, including prognostication, serious illness communication, shared decision-making, ethical care planning, and holistic care. The project focuses not only on clinical care, but also on outcomes important to patients, families and health systems, including quality of dying, family satisfaction, cost of care, and ICU resource utilization.
A central focus is implementation: understanding how these approaches can work in everyday ICU practice, where staffing, workflows, professional roles and institutional processes may differ. Engagement with healthcare professionals is helping the team understand current practices and develop practical approaches for integrating palliative care in the ICU.
Through MATHRU, the team hopes to contribute to more compassionate, patient- and family-centred critical care and to build wider collaboration around ICU-palliative care research.
Researchers, clinicians and organisations interested in this work are invited to learn more, follow emerging outputs, and explore opportunities for collaboration through the MATHRU project website: https://mathru.manipal.edu/
