Polly was nominated for her dedication in working with terminally ill children for the past four years at the Hospice of Hope Summer Trips in Romania, spending a month in Brasov for her nursing placement and constantly organising fundraising stalls in her home county, Norfolk.
Danny Greenwood, who organised the ceremony, let the audience know that they had received over 700 nominations for the given 20 awards, so all finalists should feel privileged to have been selected by the judges.
Commitment and compassion
In Polly’s acceptance speech she said: “It is a massive privilege to be standing here and representing Hospices of Hope who are the most fantastic charity.
“I only thought I would volunteer in Romania for one summer but I can’t stop going back. The nurses are incredible and have actually inspired me to become a nurse and I am in my last year at King’s College London.”
Anna Perolls, Fundraising & Communications Manager for Hospices of Hope, said: “As a charity we are very proud that Polly received the award and it couldn’t have gone to a more deserving person.
“The commitment that Polly shows as a volunteer and her compassion for our child patients is incredible, especially for her young age. We feel very fortunate for all our amazing volunteers who make our work possible.”
Hospices of Hope
Hospices of Hope is the leading charity supporting the development of palliative care in South East Europe and has pioneered services for children and adults with terminal and life-limiting illnesses.
Since 1992, Hospices of Hope have cared for over 17,500 patients and trained over 17,000 medical professionals.
The first in-patient hospice opened in the city of Brasov, Romania, in 2002 and a new hospice in Bucharest for patients with advanced cancer was completed in September 2014.
Summer Camp
After returning from Romania recently, Polly said: “Going on the Summer Camp really opened my eyes and reminded me again of all the brilliant work Hospices of Hope carries out.
“Talking to the children at the camp and learning about the challenges they are facing really encapsulates the core vitality of the work of Hospice.
“Each year I am reminded of this, making me more determined to make sure Hospices of Hopes name and genuine work is recognised through fundraising and supporting Hospice events.”
