In ICPCN’s new book, Heart Strings, Melanie shares the story of her son, Matthew James — or “MJ” as he was lovingly known — an 11-year-old boy remembered for his beaming smile, gentle soul, and joy in life’s simple pleasures.
Matthew faced complex medical challenges from birth, living with cerebral palsy and intestinal failure. Despite enduring pain and profound difficulties, he loved life — from cuddles on the sofa to the wind in his face, and even the occasional ‘Milky Way’ chocolate bar. Melanie reflects on his bravery, kindness, and the lessons he taught about what truly matters in life.
Matthew’s palliative care journey, supported by the CHAS (Children’s Hospices Across Scotland) team, transformed the final months of his life. With compassion, presence, and guidance, his family were empowered to care for him at home, ensuring that his days were filled with dignity, comfort, and love. Melanie notes that palliative care is not about giving up, but about prioritising humanity, presence, and support — for the child and the family.
