A new online comic designed to help children understand dementia from the Geller Institute of Ageing and Memory’s (GIAM) at the University of West London (UWL) was launched during World Alzheimer’s Month (September).
Here‘s a short video introducing the comic (link to comic at top of description) and press release.
Children are often overlooked in conversations about dementia, despite some people with young onset dementia still having dependent children. There are an estimated 70,800 people living with young onset dementia in the UK (Alzheimer’s Society, 2026).
The online comic is being published by GIAM’s Professor Emma Wolverson and the FIND ME research team which includes carers and people with lived experience of dementia who suggested creating resources for children. The free comic has been designed and illustrated by a team of University of Plymouth students.
Aimed primarily at 8–11-year-olds whose parents or grandparents are living with the condition, the free evidence-based comic explains dementia, changes in memory and behaviour and mental health crises through illustrations and activities.
