The appointment continues St Christopher’s longstanding association with Lancaster University: previous chief executive Barbara Monroe also held the post of Honorary Professor from 2009 until her retirement in 2014.

The director of the International Observatory on End of Life Care, Catherine Walshe, was pleased to be continuing the relationship with the South London hospice.

“This association helps us to ensure that our research and education continues to draw from and influence practice at the cutting edge of palliative and end of life care,” she said.

Research forms a key part of St Christopher’s strategy, with the hospice committed to using evidence in the care and education it provides. The studies conducted at the International Observatory on End of Life Care explore a vast number of issues – such as integrated care, advance care planning, the use of volunteers, and nursing home care – all of which have an impact on the way St Christopher’s provides care.

Heather was delighted to take on her new role.

“Since its foundation in 1967, St Christopher’s has been a pioneer in the development of hospice and end of life care. Working together with Lancaster University will help St Christopher’s achieve its ambition of being research active and driving innovation in new models of hospice care,” she said.

“It will also support my personal ambition of transforming research evidence into related practice and education. What a great opportunity and indeed a privilege.”
