’Nature’ focuses on palliative care

Categories: In The Media.

In her editorial, Rebecca Kirk comments on how “the majority of oncologists worldwide do not have specific training in palliative care or in the communication of the complex issues that are associated with discussions of this kind.” The special issue aims to highlight how palliative care can be considered throughout a patient’s treatment trajectory, and complement other therapies.

The issue includes a number of articles:

  • Palliative care reduces morbidity and mortality in cancer – Gabrielle B Rocque and James F Cleary.
  • Understanding the mechanisms and treatment options in cancer cachexia – Kenneth Fearon, Jann Arends and Vickie Baracos.
  • Palliative care for children with cancer – Elisha Waldman and Joanne Wolfe.
  • Access to opioid analgesics and pain relief for patients with cancer – Shalini Dalal and Eduardo Bruera.
  • Perspectives of a lifelong cancer survivor – improving survivorship care – Ruth Rechis, Sarah R Arvey and Ellen Burke Beckjord.
