Sylvia was inspired to become a palliative care nurse following the death of her aunt, and initially volunteered with the hospice who had cared for her aunt in Uganda. While volunteering, she met Dr Anne Merriman, who was able to arrange a sponsor so that she could complete training and become a palliative care nurse. She then went on to attend the palliative care diploma course, sponsored by Hospice Africa France, and has just recently graduated.
When Sylvia first arrived at Hospice Africa Uganda she could not read, write or speak in English. You can now read her story, in her own words on ehospice Africa.
