Overview

Spirituality, mental health, trauma informed care, hope in the context of fragility, compassion and caring for health workers who are providing care for traumatised patients in conflict settings will be considered during the day.

In addition we will present recent research on access to palliative care including pain and symptom management plus and the experience of healthcare workers. Concepts will be illustrated through a wide range of reflections and examples from challenging situations in conflict affected areas across the world. In addition to presentations from experts in the field, there will be opportunities for discussion and mutual learning, both in relation to our own UK practice and the broader global context.

Rev Rick Bauer

 (USA and East Africa). Integrating spiritual and existential care in the midst of conflict and trauma. Focus on supporting health workers who have targets during conflict and are providing care for traumatised patients.

Dr Nahla Gafer  

(Sudan, Afghanistan and Egypt). Overview of Eastern Mediterranean Region Office review of palliative care plus resolution for implementation. Practice exemplars from Sudan, Yemen and Afghanistan.

Dr Yasser Abu Jamieh 

(Gaza and Italy). Gaza Community Mental Health programme. Mental health perspective, rethinking trauma and healing. Practice exemplars from Gaza.

Dr Mhoira Leng  

(Scotland, Uganda, Gaza) Perspective on the experience of healthcare workers including reports from WHO. Reflections on the WHO surveillance systems, narratives from conflict settings and refection on ‘In the Line of Fire’ report.
