While everyone seem to agree that patients and their families should be involved in any discussions or decisions around care, new proposed legislation aims to give patients more control by:
- giving families a longer timeframe to challenge a doctor’s decision and find an alternative provider
- requiring water and nutrition be provided to patients as long as the family wanted
- preventing doctors from issuing do-not-resuscitate orders.
Personal stories arguing for and against the legislation have been published in the Victoria Advocate.
