Hundreds of supporters participated in a 10km walk to raise funds towards the care of patients at Nairobi Hospice.
Starting at Hillcrest Secondary School, the walk path led the participants into Ngong’ Forest and back to the same venue.
James Gichuru and Michael Oweno from St Mary’s emerged the fastest participants by completing the track first and second respectively, positions that attracted an award.
Mark Gachau from Aquinas High School said the walk is an interesting activity for those who wish to support the needy in society.
“It feels good to walk knowing you are making the lives of those with life threatening illnesses as comfortable as possible,” said Gachau.
The form two student urged those who have not participated to give it a try next time and they will discover it is an enjoyable experience.
Jack Kiute from the same school said that he loves charity as it helps the less privileged in society.
“It is good to take part in charity. It is recommended in the Bible,” said Kiute.
Henry Thuo from St. Johns Ambulance said that his team was present at the walk to ensure everyone’s security and attend to any injuries.
“We have an ambulance that is fully equipped with all first aid kits as well as three groups of our personnel situated at different points to ensure all is well,” said Mr. Thuo.
Other than one participant who had stomach problems whose case was attended to, Mr. Thuo said no other incidences were reported from the Saturday event.
Sergeant Hosea Some from Hadi Police Station said five groups of police officers were stationed at different location along the 10km path to ensure the safety of all participants.
“The Kenya Wildlife Rangers helped in marking the track and have stayed put to help us ensure the track remains safe until the exercise is over,” said Sergeant Thuo.
Participants were drawn from schools around Nairobi, partner organizations and the general public.
The main sponsor of the walk was the Insurance Regulatory Authority. Nairobi Hospice Administration Officer Ms. Milka Wang’ombe thanked all participants and corporates for making the event a success as well as all schools that took part in the event.
