Bringing Joy To A Child’s World

Categories: Fundraising.

Hats On 4 CPC was initiated by the International Children’s Palliative Care Network (ICPCN) in 2014. The second Friday in October, which this year falls on Friday 8 October 2021, was chosen as a day for raising international awareness of the work of children’s hospices and children’s palliative care (CPC) services worldwide. Now in its 8th year, the annual campaign is known as Hats On 4 Children’s Palliative Care with the hashtag #HatsOn4CPC.

To mark this important day, Drakenstein Palliative Hospice in Paarl is raising funds to bring some joy into the live of the 30 terminally ill children in their care. Many of their patients live in homes that have little or no income. Often they are looked after by a grandparent or family members, and these caregivers struggle to provide basic needs like warm clothing, bedding and food. These children are also not able to do many activities that others take for granted, and therefore they spend many hours indoors due to their illness or their treatment program.

Consider the example of a 12-year-old girl HIV positive girl who was admitted into their care in July 2021. Her mother had died, and her grandmother is her primary caregiver as her father is not involved. They live with the patient’s 14-year-old brother and a disabled aunt in a two-room shed with no bathroom or kitchen. They cook outdoors on fire in all weather and when the hospice team went to do their first home visit, they realized that along with all the other difficulties, there were no beds or couches in the house and all four people slept on the cold ground.

Drakenstein Palliative Hospice had been fortunate that a local bed shop had recently donated a single bed and mattress and they were able to give this to the patient. They ensure that she takes her medication and looks after herself and they provide holistic care and support for the family.

These are children who, sadly, seldom receive exciting treats and so the hospice is raising funds to be able to provide gift packs that will help the patients and their families. The packs will include:

  • Activity books
  • Pencils / Crayons
  • Playing cards
  • A board game
  • A new outfit
  • Food parcel
