Khanya Hospice is gearing up to celebrate Hospice week throughout South Africa from 6 to 12 May.
“We cannot actually show people the work that the nursing staff are doing,” said CEO, Neil McDonald. “There is a confidentiality clause and we do respect the rights of our patients, as many patients don’t want people to know about their sickness. So we just have to tell people out there what we do and where we do our work.
“As there are many Hospices in SA, our basic area of work is from the old Durban Airport to Hibberdene and about 40km inland. We cover Amanzimtoti, Adam’s Mission, Athlone Park, Doonside, Warner Beach, Illovu and some very rural areas.
Hospice nurses are well trained in palliative nursing care, pain and symptom control and at the moment, only do home-based care. “We have been planning for some time now to extend our current facility and I am glad to report that the architects are busy with the building plans.
