The compassionate team at Stepping Stone Hospice in Alberton ensured a memorable day and experience for a young man battling a life-threatening illness
At Stepping Stone Hospice, we try to create meaningful moments along our patients’ journey.
Recently, our team had the privilege of helping one of our patients, Donovan Watson, fulfil a lifelong dream.
Donovan, who recently celebrated his 18th birthday, has been courageously battling osteosarcoma for several years. Despite facing significant health challenges and living with constant pain, he continues to inspire everyone around him with his resilience, humour and positive outlook on life.

When one of our staff members learned about Donovan’s passion for cars, she and her husband set out to make a special wish come true. Through the generosity of a local supporter, Donovan was given the opportunity to experience a ride in a Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 – his favourite car.
An unforgettable experience
For Donovan, the experience was unforgettable.
“The Corvette is my favourite car,” he shared afterwards. “The car made a beautiful sound, and this American car is made for taking off. I love cars.”
The outing brought immense joy not only to Donovan but also to the many people who have become part of his support network over the years. His girlfriend, Tania van Zyl, described how his face lit up when he first saw the car and how he could not stop talking about the experience afterwards.
Donovan also took the opportunity to thank the Stepping Stone Hospice team for the care and support he has received.
“It really doesn’t feel like I’m in a hospital. It feels like I’m at a safe place,” he said.

Stories like Donovan’s remind us why holistic palliative care matters. While medical care remains an essential part of what we do, creating opportunities for joy, connection and treasured memories is equally important. Sometimes, a simple act of kindness can make a lasting difference.
