A record breaking Wakefield 10K

Categories: Fundraising.

On Sunday 22nd March, an army of 3000 runners took on the Wakefield 10K and Wakefield 5K events, running in aid of Wakefield Hospice. For the second year running, both events were completely sold out, and the fresh spring morning made the perfect backdrop to the biggest running event in Wakefield’s calendar.

The 1K Mini-Run – which takes place straight after the 10K event – was also sold out this year for the very first time.

Alex Cunniff, Wakefield Hospice Community & Events Manager said: “What an incredible day we had on Sunday. Once again, the Wakefield 10K proved to be a truly fantastic event. A huge thank you to everyone who took part, and to all those who came out to cheer on friends and loved ones.

“It’s always inspiring to see the many different reasons people run. From achieving personal bests, to completing a first-ever 10K, to running in memory of someone special – we witnessed so many powerful moments this year. It was truly heartwarming and a reminder of the profound impact the hospice has on people’s lives.

“This is only possible thanks to the continued generosity and fundraising support of our amazing community, and this year’s incredible event provides the perfect platform to build on for 2027 in what will be the 30th anniversary of the Wakefield 10K.”

The event has almost raised an amazing £200,000 so far, already smashing the record amount raised in the event’s 29-year history, and with sponsorship and donations still coming in, is on track to provide a fantastic financial boost to local patient care.

Theresa Barrett, Head of Fundraising at Wakefield Hospice added: ““We’d like to extend a huge thank you to everyone who took part in this weekend’s Wakefield 10K, 5K and 1K events, as well as to those who generously sponsored friends and loved ones. Your support has helped raise an incredible amount of money to fund vital local hospice services.

Events like these simply wouldn’t be possible without the dedication of a fantastic team working behind the scenes. I’d like to share my sincere thanks with all those involved: our volunteers, event suppliers, officials, hospice team, and of course our valued event sponsors, Key Security Group and The William Lamb Group.”

For the fifth year in a row, the men’s 10K was won by Mark Bostock (Wakefield District Harriers & Athletics Club) in a time of 31:01, with Jade Dos Santos (Victoria Park Harriers & Tower Hamlets Athletics Club, 36:21) finishing first within the women’s section. Tommy Price (Denby Dales Athletics Club) was the quickest finisher in the men’s Wakefield 5K (16:53) with Isabella Tutt (Wakefield District Harriers & Athletics Club) winning the female’s Wakefield 5K for the second year in a row in a time of 17:19.

All of the money raised from the Wakefield 10K helps Wakefield Hospice to provide specialist care to local patients and their families from across the Wakefield District.
