Directors at Hospice in the Weald swapped the boardroom for baking tins as they were tasked to compete in an Executive Bake-Off as part of celebrations to mark International Nurses Day.
Rising to the occasion, directors whisked up their best bakes to present a tempting array of cakes for nurses, patients, and other staff and volunteers to taste and judge at the Hospice in Pembury.
A custard cream-themed cake, a lemon drizzle, and a Victoria sponge were among the many mouth-watering creations.
But it was a delicious white chocolate cheesecake made by Paul Madden, the Hospice’s Care Director, that was awarded showstopper status by voters.
Graeme Armitage, the Hospice’s Director of People and Culture, said: “Our Bake-Off contest was a light-hearted way for the leadership team here at Hospice in the Weald to say thank you to our wonderful nursing staff – after all, who doesn’t like a piece of cake.
But there is a meaningful message here too, International Nurses Day allows us to acknowledge the massive difference that our compassionate, dedicated nurses make for patients and their loved ones, not just today, but every day of the year.”
As part of the celebrations, the Hospice’s workforce was invited to share thoughts about what makes a great nurse at Hospice in the Weald.
“Our nurses are brave, kind, caring, clever, adaptable, deep thinkers, practical, and above all, indispensable,” said Kerry Norman, Head of In-Patient Care.
“Nurses are awesome and the nurses here are exceptional, they regularly go above what is required to make our patients feel safe and comfortable,” said Hospice Paramedic Laura Lucchesi.
Paul Madden, Care Director, said:
“Nurses are central to care delivery, ensuring patients receive personalised attention, managing symptoms effectively, and maintaining dignity at end-of-life. Their presence offers reassurance to both patients and families, making them vital to the functioning of healthcare systems and the wellbeing of communities.”
Florence Nightingale laid the foundation for modern nursing and each year, on the 12th of May, her birthday is celebrated as International Nurses Day.
Hospice in the Weald provides care for adults and children facing life-threatening and life-limiting illnesses in Kent and East Sussex.
