Birmingham Hospice has announced the appointment of Paul Bytheway as its next Chief Executive Officer (CEO). Paul will join the hospice in the autumn.

Paul has a long-established background in the NHS, qualifying as a nurse in 1995. He enjoyed a successful career in emergency nursing before making the decision to move into general management in 2003.

Paul has held a number of senior executive appointments across the NHS and is currently Group chief delivery officer at Humber Partnership Group.

He also has experience of working within the commercial sector, supporting digital innovation within the NHS.

Paul has a longstanding commitment to voluntary service through his work with St John Ambulance where he is Chair of the Priory Group, as well as being an independent governor for the University of Wolverhampton.

Paul will take over from Simon Fuller who will be stepping down at the end of this year after four years in the role.

Paul said: “I am delighted to be joining this outstanding organisation. The commitment to our communities was ever-present during my conversations with the teams at Birmingham Hospice.

“Although a challenging time, I look forward to working with the team and communities to take forward the next chapter of the hospice’s journey.”

Chair of Birmingham Hospice Dawn Ward CBE said: “I am very excited about Paul joining the team at Birmingham Hospice and look forward to working alongside him.

“Paul is a very experienced manager in the healthcare sector and his expertise will be invaluable as we navigate challenges including increased demand for our services and funding that has not kept up with our rapidly increasing costs.”

Birmingham Hospice was formed from the merger of John Taylor Hospice in Erdington and Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice in Selly Park. It adopted its current name in March 2023 and continues to care for patients at both sites, as well as in their own homes and the community.

  • Birmingham Hospice is the new name for The Hospice Charity Partnership, formed of Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice and John Taylor Hospice.
  • In 2021, the two hospices merged to form The Hospice Charity Partnership providing expert palliative and end of life care for people and their families living with life-limiting illnesses. Offering personalised support at home, in local communities or at the hospices, we help people across Birmingham to live well with their illness, right up to the very end of life.
  • The hospice offers a range of services in people’s homes, in the community and at both its Selly Park and Erdington sites.
  • The hospice supports families and carers too, throughout a person’s illness and, after their loved one has died, with bereavement support for as long as necessary.
  • Living Well Centre services are also provided, which help people to live well with their illness.
  • Birmingham Hospice is committed to training health and social care professionals, GPs, nurses and medical students in palliative care and end of life, via seminars, courses and placements.
  • All of our services are free of charge to everyone that uses them, including patients, family members, carers and loved ones.
  • This year, Birmingham Hospice needs to raise £6.5 million through fundraising activity, income from shops and voluntary donations to cover the costs of running the charity.
  • Annual running costs are in the region of £20M or £1,678,509 per month or £55,335 per day.
  • 42% of costs need to be covered through fundraising activity, income from shops and voluntary donations.
  • 81p in every £1 is spent on clinical and support services.
