Staff in bands 1-4 make up around 40% of the NHS’s 1.3 million workforce, and are responsible for an estimated 60% of direct patient contact. However, this group receives only around 5% of the whole training budget.
Health Education England is currently consulting on the best ways to develop staff working in NHS roles banded 1-4, with the aim of developing a national strategy for these bands.
The strategy is likely to include minimum training standards for healthcare assistants, support for progression of healthcare assistants into nursing, and more opportunities to access registered training courses, like nursing.
Health Education England wants to know what people think are the barriers and challenges for this part of the workforce, and how these can be overcome. You can access the draft strategy and a short survey on the Health Education England website.
The closing date for feedback is 24 March 2014. Further details on the Health Education England website.
