Dying Matters Awareness Week 2015 resources available to order

Categories: Community Engagement.

The theme of the sixth annual Dying Matters Awareness Week is ‘Talk, Plan, Live’, and leaflets, posters and postcards based on this theme are now available to order through the Dying Matters website.

Throughout the week, organisations and individuals across the country will encourage members of the public to take five simple steps to make their end of life experience better, both for them and for their loved ones. These are:

  • write a will
  • record funeral wishes
  • plan future care and support
  • consider registering as an organ donor
  • tell loved ones their wishes.

Resources

The new postcards and posters are available in three separate versions, each of which uses one of the three different themes – Talk, Plan, Live.

On the back of each of postcard (which you can see above) there are a series of inspirational statements and practical tips relating to each theme.

These include:

  • Thinking about dying shouldn’t be seen as defeatist but as a positive step: it’s about trying to ensure you get what you want from life.
  • Decide whether you want to join the organ donor register or even leave your body to science, and share that decision with your loved ones.
  • Don’t be so worried about saying the wrong thing that you aren’t there for people who are terminally ill or bereaved.

Get involved

There are a huge variety of ways you can get involved. From sending a tweet to running a high-profile event. Even just having a chat with family, friends or colleagues about the importance of preparing for death can change perceptions.

Last year hospices across the country held death cafés, open days/evening, drop-in sessions, roadshows and workshops, to encourage people to talk openly about the subject of death, offer practical advice on advance care planning, making a will and planning a funeral, and highlight local support. See the coverage of last year’s Dying Matters Week on ehospice for ideas and inspiration.

After its phenomenal success last year, the hashtag #YODO – which stands for You Only Die Once – will be a big part of the week again and key to raising awareness on social media.
