Help NICE identify key areas for quality improvement in end of life care

Categories: Care.

At the end of last year, NICE published a new guideline on the care of dying adults in the last days of life, aimed at supporting healthcare professionals to care for adults during their last two or three days of life.

Now NICE is developing a related quality standard – a concise set of prioritised statements designed to drive measurable quality improvements.

The quality standard for care of dying adults will cover all settings and services in which care is provided by health and social care staff to all adults approaching the end of life.

As part of the current topic engagement, registered stakeholders and individuals are being asked to suggest what they would want to see included in the quality standard, prioritising areas which would have the greatest potential to improve the quality of care.

NICE is also interested in any areas of practice that might be considered as emergent (currently only being done by a minority of providers) but which have the potential to be widely adopted and drive improvements in the longer term.

The topic engagement only runs for short time – the deadline for submissions is 5pm on Friday 17 June.

The quality standard for care of dying adults in the last days of life is expected to be published in March 2017.

A separate quality standard will be developed for end of life care for infants, children and young people (under 18). A NICE guideline on end of life care for infants, children and young people is currently in development.
