St Elizabeth Hospice has hosted a Public Health Celebration event to promote the impact of Compassionate Communities. Following the recent news of East Suffolk achieving accreditation as an official Compassionate Community, the event saw local community groups and healthcare professionals learning more about Compassionate Communities via talks from a diverse range of keynote speakers.
Held on 2 March, at Kesgrave Community Centre, the day-long event saw talks covering such topics as What is a Compassionate Community and What is its need?, Embedding the ethos of ‘the arts creating compassionate communities’ as well as a roundtable discussion and networking opportunities.
Emily Gage, Community Transformation Lead at St Elizabeth Hospice, said: “Thank you to all the speakers and attendees who joined our Public Health Celebration and made it such an enjoyable and informative day.
“It provided a valuable opportunity to reflect on the success of Compassionate Communities in our local community and to share the positive impact the initiative can have. Hopefully the celebration will inspire even more people to join and adopt Compassionate Communities, as we seek to build a more supportive community for those facing death, dying and bereavement.”
Compassionate Communities is a national approach which supplements the support given by healthcare providers, by equipping the public to support each other with during some of the most difficult times in their lives, such as the death of a loved one or the diagnosis of a life-limiting illness.
Through Compassionate Communities, St Elizabeth Hospice provides resources and guidance to enable anyone to feel more confident in having conversations surrounding the often ‘taboo’ topics of bereavement, death and dying.
