Trinity Hospice is supporting a national call to raise awareness of the importance of an early diagnosis for people affected by dementia.
As Dementia Action Week activities take place across the UK, Trinity’s Admiral Nurse team will be representing the support the hospice provides to people living with dementia and their loved ones on the Fylde coast.
The national campaign is led by the Alzheimer’s Society which says diagnosis is vital to give people access to the care, treatment and support they desperately need. Yet, one in three people with dementia do not have a diagnosis.
Trinity’s Admiral Nurse, Maxine Emslie, and Assistant, Julie Woolley-Hemming, will be representing the hospice at a number of events throughout the week.
They’ll be at Blackpool Victoria Hospital on Monday providing support and advice to patients and health care professionals about living with dementia.
On Tuesday they’ll be leading a dementia awareness session for care agencies working across Blackpool, Fylde and Wyre before a meeting with the Dementia Action Alliance, and on Friday they’ll be at the Dementia Awareness Hub, at Bickerstaffe House career academy, then later in the day they will attend the Sporting Memories Dementia Café at Blackpool Football Club.
But the highlight of the week will be a garden party for residents and health care professionals at the Trinity Hospice and Brian House Children’s Hospice Allotment at the HASSRA Sports Pavilion in Thornton.
The party will include refreshments and a cake sale, information stalls and plenty of fun activities for children and grown-ups alike.
Maxine said: “Dementia Action Week is all about raising awareness of how important it is to receive a diagnosis as early as possible so people with symptoms can access the best support and care for them.
“Our activities this week will help us engage with people working in care settings recognise the symptoms of dementia and support health care workers to get the right support at the right time for people living with the condition.
“We’re really looking forward to our garden party, which will allow us to showcase the wonderful, immersive growing space we have at the allotment and celebrate the difference it makes to local people who need hospice care.”
The open day is free to attend. It takes place on Thursday 22nd May from 11.30am-2.30pm at HASSRA Sports Pavilion, Anchorsholme Lane East, Thornton.
