Hospice UK announces Wolfson Foundation bursaries for hospice and care home staff

Categories: Education.

The first type is for care home nurses and healthcare assistants. The second one is for hospice staff (nurses, healthcare assistants, doctors, allied health professional and social workers).

The education bursaries are for staff  to attend education events which will aid them to improve the quality of end of life care for their residents, patients and families.

The Wolfson Foundation is a charity awarding grants to support and promote excellence in the fields of science and medicine, the arts and humanities, education and health and disability. Education is one of the Wolfson Foundation’s central themes, and since 2002 they have generously funded education bursaries which the Hospice UK grants team manages.

The hospice sector alone cannot meet all the additional and growing demands for end of life care and we need to find ways to ‘open up’ hospice care.  It is vital that we help to increase capacity and the style of care beyond the walls of hospices. Furthermore we need to empower a strong and responsive hospice sector. One of the ways to do this is through education.

So this year, the clinical and grants team put their thinking hats on to explore what other education events or courses might be of benefit to those working in care homes and hospices.  We commissioned an evaluation of previous bursary recipients from the Wolfson Palliative Care Research Centre and drew together a list of courses which we knew were delivered by credible and reliable providers, were not always accessible because of financial costs, and were relevant and useful to those providing end of life care in a variety of settings.

Following discussion and agreement with the Wolfson Foundation, we have now extended the list of courses for which bursaries are eligible. As well as university accredited palliative care courses, new courses include:

  • European Certificate in Essential Palliative Care
  • European Certificate in Holistic Dementia Care
  • City and Guilds Level 2 and 3 – award in awareness of end of life care and award in awareness in dementia
  • Attendance at 2 day Advanced Communication course delivered by a Connected provider.
  • Sage and Thyme Facilitators Train the Trainer Course

Early application is encouraged as there is a strict criteria and once the budget for the Wolfson bursary programme has been fully allocated we will cease to award further grants, until such a time as additional funds have been raised.

So whether you work in or with the care home or hospice sector or are a provider of the eligible courses, we hope that by sharing this news and being able to support these education events, we can together help increase capacity and the style of care beyond the walls of hospices.
