In Focus Dame Cicely Saunders Exhibition Extended in London

The Florence Nightingale Museum has been deeply moved by the positive feedback received by our visitors regarding our In Focus Dame Cicely Saunders temporary exhibition. Because of this and the importance of the story being told, we have decided to extend the display! The last day to view this exhibition will be Sunday 1^st March.

The space gives an in depth look at the life of the remarkable woman who transformed palliative care and introduced the modern hospice movement. Dame Cicely Saunders used her vast experience as a nurse, almoner and then a doctor, alongside her religious beliefs to improve the lives of patients and their families who were living with terminal illness.

Starting with her time at the Nightingale Training School, she built up a wealth of knowledge about pain and caring for the terminally ill. Throughout her studies, paid work and voluntary commitments, her focus was always on the patients and relieving their symptoms. This eventually led to her becoming a world-renowned expert on the care of the terminally ill. She helped to spread her work by inviting people from across the globe to see the hospice she had set up based on her life’s work and experience.

We are also very lucky to have on loan Dame Cicely Saunder’s Order of Merit which will be displayed in the exhibition.

In addition to the exhibition itself, the museum is also hosting two events focused on the life and legacy of Dame Cicely Saunders.

• Friday 13^th February will hold a Special Topics Talk: Dame Cicely Saunders Pioneer of the Modern Hospice Movement at 2:30pm. It will provide an in-depth view into the life of Cicely Saunders. Like Florence Nightingale, Dame Cicely Saunders was a woman of wit and brains and this talk will cover the upbeat humanity of this story along with the seriousness of this important topic.
• Thursday 26^th February at our museum late we will be hosting “Book On the Right Shelf”. The talk will start at 6:30pm and be given by a fellow Nightingale Nurse and representative from St. Christopher’s Hospice. Listeners will learn not just about Cicely Saunders, but her continuing impact in the modern day. 50% of all ticket sales for this night will be donated directly to St. Christopher’s Hospice.
