Liverpool Care Pathway controversy ’puzzling’: NHS

Categories: In The Media.

The updated page on the NHS Choices website clarifies that the Liverpool Care Pathway (LCP) ‘is a scheme that is intended to improve the quality of care in the final hours or days of a patient’s life, and to ensure a peaceful and comfortable death’. It states that the controversy is puzzling, as the LCP has been standard practice for many years, and has been recognised nationally and internationally as an example of good practice.

The page says that if there were failings, it could be the result of professionals not following recommendations made by the LCP, rather than the fault of the pathway itself. It also states that the NHS finds it ‘disappointing to see the level of cynicism’ in media allegations that trusts using the LCP according to its usage.
