“Make every step count” – Local hospice seeks London Marathon runners

Categories: Fundraising.

Local charity Treetops Hospice is appealing to runners who’ve struck lucky in this year’s London Marathon ballot to raise funds to help care for patients.

The ballot results will be announced on Monday 14 March when around 17,000 people will hear they have a place in the iconic running event.

Every year, kind-hearted fundraisers raise money so that Treetops can care for over 1,800 patients with a life-limiting condition, and their families, as well as those who’ve been bereaved.

Bryony Sibson, from Matlock, ran the London Marathon in aid of Treetops last year. Hospice at Home nurses cared for Bryony’s husband’s grandmother during the final stages of her life:

“Treetops provided end-of-life nurses to help her through her final weeks and their compassionate service was invaluable. It made a huge difference to how our family was able to cope, and I remember the positive impact it had on everybody.

“Treetops are an incredible charity and do a lot of good in our community, so it was only right that we try and support them and give back to what they were able to give to our family.

“Fundraising for Treetops makes a real difference. You can see the impact that donations have on the charity and how far they go to making someone’s life better.”

Adela Appleby, head of community relationships at Treetops Said:

“We’d love London Marathon runners to join Team Treetops. Every mile you complete means you are helping a local person at the very end of life to remain in the comfort of their home with their family around them, cared for by a Treetops nurse.”

About Treetops Hospice

Treetops Hospice, the leading end-of-life care charity in Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire, provides nursing care and emotional support for adults with life-limiting conditions, and their families.

The charity provides support from diagnosis onwards for patients with conditions such as cancer, motor neurone disease and heart and respiratory conditions.

Founded in 1983, Treetops supports thousands of local people – and their families – through the most difficult time of their lives. Our team of over 40 Hospice at Home nurses provided over 23,800 hours of care to terminally-ill patients last year, working day and night to give much-needed support.

We have a team of bereavement counsellors who provide over 4,000 counselling sessions – over 900 of them to children and young people. Wellbeing team members provide valuable information and support to those who need it, while our experts in end-of life care and bereavement support dedicate many hours to training NHS staff about death and dying.

Treetops are lucky to have over 450 amazing volunteers who help to keep the hospice running smoothly.

It costs £4.2m each year to run the hospice. A counselling session for a bereaved child costs £34. An overnight Hospice at Home nursing shift for a patient at the end of life costs £108.

Treetops is doing all it can to continue to support those in most need and welcomes donations to ensure the future of the hospice and its services: www.treetopshospice.org.uk/donate
