Mary Stevens Hospice launches new 3-year Strategy

Categories: Leadership.

The Mary Stevens Hospice has announced the launch of their new three-year strategy, outlining their strategic aims for the coming years.

In what is an uncertain time for the hospice sector, this strategy reflects the hospice’s commitment to adapting to the evolving needs of the local community, while remaining aligned with national palliative care objectives.

The strategy is centred around three overarching aims:

  1. delivering 24/7 equitable access to palliative and hospice care,
  2. ensuring financial and operational resilience, and
  3. committing to greater environmental sustainability.

In 2023, an internal Strategic Development Team was established, providing an opportunity for staff and volunteers to engage in the strategy’s development. This collaborative approach also incorporated feedback from individuals who had previously accessed hospice services.

Additionally, the hospice invited a local artist to a Social Work day event to engage with staff and gain insights into the services provided, with the goal of illustrating the strategy in a way that captured the essence of the hospice’s activities and moving away from a traditional corporate document.

After months of consultation and input, the new strategy was unveiled at the hospice’s annual Summer Fayre, where it was shared with members of the public.

Claire Towns, Chief Executive Officer, said: “We’re delighted to launch this strategy which will guide our development over the next three years. This strategy belongs to the whole hospice and was informed through engagement and hearing people’s views and experiences. Thank you to everyone who was involved in shaping our strategy.”

Gemma Allen, Chair of the Strategic Development Team, stated, “It’s an exciting time as we work towards achieving our strategic aims. We are prioritising the care and services that we provide to meet the growing needs of our local community, in addition to focusing on other significant areas.

We’ve launched several staff wellbeing initiatives to support operational resilience and employee retention, conducted financial mapping focus groups with key staff members and have plans for new supportive programmes. I look forward to seeing our vision develop into tangible outcomes over the next three years.”
