Nationwide donation helps Sue Ryder hospice to improve care for patients

Categories: Care and Fundraising.
A new piece of equipment funded by Nationwide Building Society is helping specialists at Sue Ryder Duchess of Kent Hospice in Reading provide better care for patients with suspected lymphoedema.

Lymphoedema (chronic swelling) is a build-up of fluid in the body’s tissues – a condition that cannot be cured but can be managed. It can happen anywhere in the body and is caused by trauma to the lymphatic system, including cancer treatments (surgery or radiotherapy), infections, reduced mobility, or, in some cases, it can be genetic.

The new lymphscanner, made possible by the building society, is helping Sue Ryder Lymphoedema Therapists to check for swelling in areas which are harder to assess, so that patients can get the right treatment as soon as possible.

Zoë Taylor, Lymphoedema Nurse and Team Lead, said: “Many patients can feel numbness or heaviness and worry that they have swelling, but sometimes it’s not. The new lymphscanner supports our assessments by helping us determine whether swelling is present, which can give patients peace of mind and avoid lengthy treatments. This means our Sue Ryder Therapists can give more personalised care to more people.”

Zoë continues: “If swelling is found, early diagnosis means we can quickly control and reduce this, while relieving distressing symptoms. We’re very grateful to Nationwide – their support is making a huge difference.”

Kerry O’Malley, Head of Social Impact for Nationwide, said: “The Nationwide Colleagues Grant programme is a way colleagues can support charities close to their hearts and we’re incredibly proud to have been able to support Sue Ryder Duchess of Kent Hospice. The work the hospice does and the care it provides is invaluable to the local community, and we are pleased to have made a contribution that will have such a positive impact.”

The lymphoedema team at Sue Ryder Duchess of Kent Hospice provides a specialist service led by Sue Ryder Physiotherapists and Nurses.  This service is available to all those who have a GP within West Berkshire and have swelling that is related to cancer and as a result of cancer treatment. To access this service, ask your doctor, nurse, or other healthcare professional for a referral.
