Rosen visited hospice workers, bereavement experts, doctors, psychologists, teachers and a Death Cafe in his making of the programme.
The programme shows Michael exploring different ways that people cope with bereavement where he:
- speaks with Winstons Wish, a charity that helps children who have lost a family member and are dealing with bereavement and confusion
- sits in on a training session for teachers and carers in Cheltenham
- speaks to a doctor from the Centre for Death and Society about the topic of using tatoos to memorialise loved ones who have died
- visits a Death Cafe in East London, a place where death can be discussed freely and openly.
Michael Rosen is a former Children’s Laureate who has written many children’s books on loss and bereavement, including the highly regarded ‘Michael Rosen’s Sad Book’ which is based on the experience of grieving over the death of his son.
The programme, called Word of Mouth, lasts for 28 minutes and is available to listen online on BBC Radio 4 in the UK for the next year until 8 January 2014.
