Six hospices are among this year’s Sunday Times Top 100 Not For Profit Organisations to work for.
Dove House Hospice in Hull has reached the highest position at number 10, followed by children’s hospice Julia’s House in Dorset and Wiltshire at number 12, their highest ranking for nine years.
Diane De Souza, Head of HR at Julia’s House, said: “We are delighted to see an improvement in our employee engagement scores and our ranking. Both are good indicators to potential new recruits that Julia’s House is a great place to work. The information provided by staff helps us build a picture of how effective they believe their leadership is, how they are managed, their team work, wellbeing and remuneration. We’re then able to assess what is working well, what could work better and make appropriate changes.”
The Sunday Times 100 list is based on feedback from staff, who rate their workplace on a number of aspects including work/life balance, whether they feel appreciated by their manager, and whether their organisation is run on strong values and principles.
Other hospices on the list are St Gemma’s Hospice in Leeds at 18, Douglas Macmillan in Stoke-on-Trent at 23, St Barnabas in Lincoln at 53, and new entry St Michael’s Hospice in Hereford at 86.
Lisa Phillips, Head of People and Development at St Barnabas who have jumped 36 places since last year, commented: “We are over the moon to not only be in the Top 100 once again, but to have risen so significantly in the rankings. A particular statistic that stood out to me was that 88 per cent of our staff feel proud to work for the hospice. Our management scores have also significantly improved, which is fantastic as we launched a new Management Development Programme in 2019 based on feedback from the last survey.”
Additionally Alzheimer’s Research UK is at 39, shortly after being listed as one of the 75 Best Companies to Work for in the East of England. Chief exec Ian Wilson said: “I am incredibly proud to have accepted these awards on behalf of Alzheimer’s Research UK, where I am extremely privileged to lead exceptionally talented and passionate people who have the ambitions and determination to create a world free from the fear, harm and heartbreak of dementia.”
Additionally the Rainbow Trust, the charity that provides emotional and practical support to families who have a child with a life-limiting condition has reached number 35, Crossroads Care Hertfordshire North, who support carers in Hertfordshire has reached number 44, and City Health Care Partnership, providers of healthcare services throughout Yorkshire is at 77.
