An intrepid vicar has completed a record-breaking challenge to raise funds for North London Hospice in Finchley – snowboarding at every snow centre in the UK in just one day.
Father Young raised almost £1700 for the hospice, where he volunteers as the Anglican chaplain.
He began the challenge at 7 am on the slopes of Hemel Hempstead’s The Snow Centre, then headed northwards visiting snow domes in Milton Keynes, Tamworth, Castleford and Manchester before arriving at Glasgow’s Snowfactor just before it closed at 10pm.
It is believed to be the first time anyone has attempted the 478 mile journey to ski or snowboard at all six snow centres in Great Britain in one day.
Father Steven, who is vicar at St Michael’s Church in north London, London caught the skiing bug in his 20s and moved onto snowboarding 10 years ago. He said:
“It was a long but exciting day and we made it to Glasgow in the nick of time – just enough time to get up and down the slope! North London Hospice provides incredible end of life care and family support and it’s a privilege to volunteer for them. I’m so grateful for all the encouragement I received on the day and delighted to have beaten my £1000 target. Thanks to everyone that donated.”
North London Hospice’s Director of Fundraising Robin Langrishe commented:
“People take on many challenges to raise funds for our hospice, but we’ve never had a snowboarding vicar! Steven is a wonderful advocate of our work in end-of-life care and the funds he has raised will enable us to continue to provide support. “
