Ashgate Hospice’s biggest ever Sparkle Night Walk raised a record-breaking amount for end of life care in North Derbyshire.
More than 3,100 people sported pink and flashing bunny ears to take on the 10km walk from Chesterfield Football Club on 1st July.
The total figure raised was a phenomenal £317, 671 – the most the walk has ever raised by more than £50,000.
The event, which saw 3,127 supporters take part – smashing the previous record of 3,052 in 2019, will return again next year on Saturday 22nd June.
Head of Fundraising at Ashgate Hospice, Jack Wood, said he was “simply overwhelmed” by the support of the event’s participants.
“For more than 3,100 people to take on this year’s event is just amazing and we are so grateful to all walkers who turned out in droves,” he said.
“We are simply overwhelmed that our supporters have helped us raise such an incredible amount towards our care.
“Not only did they help light up Chesterfield’s night, but their efforts will go a long way towards funding end of life care and support for patients and their families across North Derbyshire.”
The generosity of the hospice’s sponsors and corporate supporters meant the hospice saved £29,000 in running costs on the night – meaning more funds will go towards funding vital care.
The route took the walkers from the stadium down the A61 bypass, which was closed to traffic, past the crooked spire and through the streets of Chesterfield before returning to the football ground.
Florist Sam Brailsford was one of the participants and walked with her husband, Mark Brailsford, in memory of friends who received care at Ashgate Hospice.
Sam said on the night: “We’ve come along to raise money for a worthy cause. Two of my friends passed away at the hospice and Mark’s had friends who have received care too.
“We’re not just walking for the people who we’ve known who have died, but for the people who are using the service now and will need it in the future.
“I’ve been taking part in the walk for more than 10 years now. For me the atmosphere is lovely and people are so nice.
“All the walkers have a chat, they’re all smiley and jolly. Everyone has a reason to be here and it makes you rekindle the good times you had with people who are no longer here.”
Plans are already under way for the Sparkle Night Walk 2024, set to take place on Saturday 22nd June, with super early bird tickets being sold now for a reduced rate until 13th August.
More than 1,000 people have already signed up to next year’s event, which the hospice hopes will be “even bigger”.
Jack Wood added: “The wheels are already in motion for Sparkle Night Walk 2024 – you can register at our early bird pride for just £8!
“Will you come along to make next year’s event even bigger?!”
