Stories from the day hospice

Categories: In The Media.

Wellcome Trust senior editor Chrissie Giles spent time at the Princess Alice Hospice in Esher during the summer of 2012 where she ran a creative writing group. Now, the stories about the participants and from them are being published in a series of blog posts.

In the blog Chrissie reflects on her experiences at the hospice, as well as featuring some of the stories written during the sessions by group members.

Her expectations of a day hospice were altered almost immediately – in the post dated 14 November 2012 she writes about her first experience at the hospice:

“You want to hear stories of my life?” one woman asked. “Most of them are X-rated.”

It wasn’t the first thing I was expecting to hear when I walked into the day hospice, but then, what did I expect? If I’d ever been in a hospice before I didn’t remember – and it doesn’t seem like the kind of thing you’d forget.

You can follow the blog ‘Stories from the day hospice‘ on the Wellcome Collection blog.

The exhibition ‘Death: A Self-portrait’ is open until 28 February 2013 and you can read more about the exhibition in our recent ehospice article ‘Death showcased in varied exhibition’.
