Two projects were led by visiting artist/arts co-ordinator Susie Hewlett who commented: “There is a wonderful range of talent here among people who come to St Joseph’s. I have been lucky enough to be working in day hospice and the wards again for the past 12 weeks to create two new projects.”
One of the projects was inspired by the book “I remember” by Joe Brainard. Day hospice patients created their own poems using “I remember…” as the opening phrase for each line.
Patients reflected on their own lives, recalling funny, poignant and moving memories from the distant and more recent past. The resulting poems provide a wonderful insight into the varied lives and experiences of the people that attend our hospice.
Each poem was accompanied by self-portraits – patients were photographed in profile and then worked with collage to create an image of themselves. Some of the images reflect peoples’ interests or particular places, hobbies or things that have meaning for them personally.
After completing the project, an exhibition was held in the community hub in the reception area of St Joseph’s Hospice. The exhibition will be available for viewing throughout the summer.
