Telephone support as a specific service to community patients has been offered from Sobell House for over five years. Whether from simply listening to providing detailed assessment, advice and liaison it has proved its value as a means of support.
Provision of phone support means that up to one hundred community patients who do not need visits can be actively monitored with full access to other palliative care services as needs change. Checklists are used where helpful but key to the provision of high quality telephone support is the development of an open and empathic style. There has been unequivocal positive feedback from patients, families and other health professionals.
