St Cuthbert’s Hospice chosen as Charity Partner of the 2024 Durham Fringe Festival. Magician Tom Bolton visited St Cuthbert’s Hospice to bring a touch of magic to their Living Well Centre and give Hospice guests a taste of his Durham Fringe Festival show.

Tom, a member of The Magic Circle, has his own magic show bar in Durham City Centre called The Magic Corner and will be performing as part of the Durham Fringe Festival with his show ‘Grow Up Magic Man’ on the 25th, 26th and 27thJuly at the Assembly Rooms Theatre.
The Hospice, based in Durham, has been chosen as the charity partner of this year’s Festival which sees thousands visit the city centre in July to enjoy entertainment, with over 250 performances in this year’s lineup.

Durham Fringe Festival returns 24th – 28th July, with eight performance spaces over seven venues, and 250 performances across five days. There’s something for everyone including theatre, magic, spoken word, music, cabaret, comedy, and daytime family shows. This year, with the support of partners including Dance City, the festival has an additional focus on dance and physical theatre, which will be presented in the Fonteyn Ballroom in Dunelm House.

“We’re really thrilled to be working in partnership with St Cuthbert’s Hospice this year. The Hospice does such amazing work for people and communities in Durham City and the surrounding areas, and it felt like such a natural fit for our work at the Fringe. As well as supporting artists and performers, one of our key aims at Durham Fringe CIC (community interest company) is to have positive impacts for our place, and working with the Hospice as a charity partner is a great way to do even more in this respect. The team have been a pleasure to work with, and we’ve raised more than £100 in donations already.”
This year’s venues are: Palace Green, Assembly Rooms Theatre, Cafedral, Fabios, Durham City Theatre, Pemberton Rooms, and the Fonteyn Ballroom and Vane Tempest at Dunelm House.

St Cuthbert’s Hospice in Durham is a registered charity. Whilst some of the running costs are met by the NHS through local Commissioning Groups, a further £2.5 million pounds per year must be raised by the hospice to run the services, with much of the money coming from local events and fundraising activities. St Cuthbert’s Hospice opened in 1988 and provides care for people with life limiting conditions, as well as giving support to their families.
The Living Well Centre offers day services each week day, such as physiotherapy, complementary therapies, advice on symptom control and social activities.
The In-Patient Unit, which opened in 2006 following a public appeal, allows the Hospice to offer 24-hour care for people living in Durham, Chester le Street and the surrounding areas. There are 10 bedrooms which provide individualised care planned to support the total wellbeing of each person, taking into account their physical, psychological, social and spiritual needs. It provides holistic care for patients with life limiting illness.
