The Big Avon Paddle – Lots more to splash about!

Categories: Community Engagement and Fundraising.

The Big Avon Paddle is back for a fourth year on Saturday 14 September! It promises to deliver even more fun with new elements for participants to enjoy.  Get on board with Dorothy House on the River Avon, and help us raise vital funds for hospice care in our community.

What’s involved in the event?

The Big Avon Paddle takes place at The Boathouse, Bath starting at 10am and finishing at 6pm.

This year there are two options to paddle.  The new 1.5-mile fun loop starts at The Boathouse and goes upstream towards Weston Lock and back.  The 4.5-mile loop heads downstream to the Avon County Rowing Club and back.

It’s up to participants which route they choose or whether they decide to paddle a mix of both routes, even deciding how many loops they can complete during the day at a pace to suit themselves. It promises be a fun filled day out for participants of all abilities and ages and an ideal team-building event for families, friends and colleagues!

This year, an optional fun Pirate theme provides the opportunity to dress in pirate costume and compete for the ‘best dressed pirate’ prize.  Refreshments will be available at The Boathouse and there will be live music entertainment throughout the day.

Each entry fee includes a finisher’s medal and pizza at the end of the day.

Why take part?

Here are just some of the reasons participants take part in this fantastic event.

“You looked after both my parents in the final stages of their lives. I would love to give back. I can’t run marathons, but love to paddle. Thanks for all you do.”  Collette

“I have previously taken part and would like to do so again. Dorothy House has supported both friends and family.” Andrew

“My company have made Dorothy House our charity of the year.  As a keen paddler with my own board, this would be a good thing for me to do to support them.” Pippa

“I have participated previously, raising over £300.  Dorothy House are currently supporting my step dad in the late stages of Parkinson’s and his other multiple health issues. I would like to combine my love for paddle boarding and raise money for such a great cause.” Kate

By taking part in The Big Avon Paddle participants are helping Dorothy House continue to provide free end-of-life care in the community, supporting local patients and their families through the most difficult of times.

Notes for editors:

Dorothy House Hospice Care provides exceptional free palliative and end of life care to a population of over 550,000 people in Bath & North East Somerset, and parts of Somerset and Wiltshire.

We provide medical services, family support and personalised hospice at home care for around half of the people in our community who are approaching death. We are funded partly by the NHS, but predominantly by donations, our 25 shops, and fundraising efforts. For every £1 from the government, we have to work hard to raise another £4 to make sure that we can meet the growing need for our services.

To support us with our many fundraising efforts, please visit us online at dorothyhouse.org.uk or call us on 01225 721 480.
