Researchers in palliative and end of life care are leading a national forum which brings researchers and clinicians together to discuss leading topics in palliative and end of life care. The forum has established a popular webinar series featuring insights, topics and discussions with leading experts in the field.
The next forum will be held on Tuesday 16 September, 11am – 12.00pm, online on Teams.
The topic will focus on the pressing issue of timely access to end-of-life medication. It will be chaired by Dr Ben Bowers, an assistant professor of primary care with the University of Cambridge and an honorary nurse consultant in palliative care.
The webinar will open with an introduction from Professor Morag Farquhar of the University of East Anglia, co-lead of the NIHR ARC Palliative and End of Life Care (PEoLC) National Leadership forum.
About the speakers
Presentations will be delivered by:
- Associate professor Sarah Yardley and senior research fellow Dr Sally-Anne Francis (UCL), who explore the work involved in managing end-of-life medications across settings, and the critical gaps between work-as-intended and work-as-done;
- Dr Rosanna Fennessy (University of Cambridge), who shares recent research mapping patient journeys to understand experiences with anticipatory prescribing and how care can be improved
- Dr Ikumi Okamoto (University of Edinburgh), who examines challenges to timely access to medications issues during out-of-hours periods.
The session concludes with a live Q&A, giving participants the opportunity to engage with the speakers.

Speakers will include:
Sarah Yardley
Sarah Yardley is an Associate Professor of Palliative Medicine in the Marie Curie Palliative Care Research Department, University College London. Clinically she works in the University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust / Central & North West London NHS Foundation Trust palliative care service. Her research focuses on reducing the gaps between rhetoric and reality, policy and practice, expectations and experience in healthcare. She is particularly interested in the hidden work of people – patients, families, carers, and healthcare professionals – and the need to redeem the role of relationship-centred practices in healthcare systems.
Sally-Anne Francis
Sally-Anne is a Senior research fellow at the Marie Curie Palliative Care Research Department, University College London. She is a health services researcher and academic pharmacist with an extensive background in pharmacy practice research. Her current research in palliative care practice focuses on understanding the processes and outcomes of healthcare decision-making, and creating patient-centred systems involving a wide range of participants with lived and learned experience.
Rosanna Fennessy
Dr Rosanna Fennessy is a research psychologist with the Palliative and End of Life Care Research group (PELiCam) at the University of Cambridge. Her research interests include mapping patients’ experiential journeys in healthcare, patient, carer and healthcare professionals’ experiences of anticipatory prescribing, and communicating uncertainty in multimorbidity.
Ikumi Okamoto
Dr Ikumi Okamoto is a research fellow in Clinical Psychology at the School of Health in Social Science, University of Edinburgh. With a background in medical anthropology and qualitative research, she has a particular interest in palliative and end-of-life care and the social dimensions of death and dying. Her work explores a broad range of related topics, including palliative care in Japan; out-of-hours and community-based services in the UK; the research workforce in palliative care; and bereavement experiences and support.

Ben Bowers
Dr Ben Bowers is a clinical-academic community nurse based with University of Cambridge, and Deputy Theme Lead for NIHR ARC East of England’s Palliative and End of Life Care theme. Ben leads a programme of interdisciplinary research focused on improving care of the dying at home. Ben’s Wellcome post-doctoral interdisciplinary research is investigating the human and system factors involved in the safe, effective and timely use of injectable symptom control medications.
