Nick will lead the charity into a new era as it strives to make sure seriously ill children and their families can make the most of every moment they have together.
Leading UK children’s palliative care charity Together for Short Lives appoints Nick Carroll as its new chief executive.
Nick was previously the charity’s Director of Income and Engagement and replaces Andy Fletcher, who left the charity in October after six years as chief executive.
Nick takes up the role after more than five years as a senior leader at the charity, most recently as Director of Income and Engagement. He replaces Andy Fletcher, who left Together for Short Lives in October after six years to become Chief Executive at Muscular Dystrophy UK (MDUK).
Sarah Talbot-Williams, Chair of Together for Short Lives’ Board of Trustees, said:
“On behalf of the Board, I am delighted to announce the appointment of Nick Carroll as our new Chief Executive. Nick brings a wealth of experience, knowledge and expertise, and very particularly a deep commitment to the mission and values of Together for Short Lives.”
“Nick has played a significant part in the success of the last five years growing the charity with great partnerships and we are confident that he will take that knowledge and learning into this new chapter of possibilities and opportunities and challenges. We are committed to supporting the whole children’s palliative care sector as they struggle to provide greater support with less funding.”
“Nick knows well our members, our partners and most particularly our families and their children who need our support. I have no doubt that he will keep them at the centre of all we do.”
Nick said:
“I am very excited to be given the opportunity to lead Together for Short Lives as we continue to work to make sure seriously ill children and their families can make the most of every moment they have together.”
“A series of complex challenges face seriously ill children, their families and the services they rely on. However, we have a clear strategy to help them access the high quality, sustainable palliative care they need.”
“In 2023/24, we reached more families than ever before through our Family Support Hub. We brought together thousands of healthcare professionals to improve the way care is delivered. And we campaigned to influence policy to give long-lasting support to seriously ill children and their families.”
“Our challenge now is to go further and faster to ensure they receive the vital support they need. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work together with families, professionals, politicians, policymakers and all of our supporters and partners to realise our vision. This has to be an urgent priority for all of us: seriously ill children and their families do not have time to wait.”

About Together for Short Lives
When a child’s life is expected to be short, there’s no time to waste. Together for Short Lives is here to make sure the 99,000 seriously ill children and their families across the UK can make the most of every moment they have together, whether that’s for years, months or only hours. We stand alongside families, supporting them to make sure they get the vital care and help that they need.
We support and empower families caring for seriously ill children by listening to their needs and helping them find the right care. We provide easily digestible information about available support so families can spend less time searching for help and have more time together. We connect families with support services and other families who understand what they are going through, so they don’t feel as alone.
99,000 babies, children and young people are living in the UK with health conditions that are life-limiting or life-threatening—and the number is rising. Many of these children have complex conditions and need specialist care 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
The impact is enormous; affected parents, brothers and sisters, grandparents, and the wider family make up an estimated 790,000 people who are actively involved in care. For those who love these children, accessing help and the right care can be emotionally stressful. For those of us who haven’t faced it, it’s unimaginable.
Getting the right support can make a lifetime of difference. And that’s what we are here for.
